What is a Windows file share anyway?

A file share is a folder stored on a server that people, applications or other systems can access over the network.

It behaves much like an ordinary folder on your computer, but the files are stored centrally rather than on your local machine. Several authorised users can therefore be provided access the same documents, templates, applications or project files.

In Windows, this type of shared folder normally uses SMB, which stands for Server Message Block.
